VBT: Extra Terrestrial Noir

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: SciFi
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A PSYCHO-CRIMINAL EXTRATERRESTRIAL ON A SUBURBAN CUL-DE-SAC
A FAMILY ON THE BRINK OF ALL-ENCOMPASSING INSOLVENCY
A TWELVE-YEAR-OLD UBER-GENIUS DAUGHTER IN THE LINE OF FIRE
CAN SHE SAVE THE FAMILY, NOT TO MENTION THE PLANET?
An extraterrestrial crashes into a suburban cul-de-sac Colonial, absorbs every binary bit of
information ever chronicled in all of human history, rearranges its molecules and presents itself
as a couple of late and legendary film noir superstars, then immediately displays an appetite for
debauchery, depravity, decadence, and destruction, seducing the family into its psychopathic
criminal orbit with irresistible Hollywood panache, alluring sexual charisma, and inconceivable
intergalactic powers.…all in the name of saving the family from their emotional, marital, and
financial ruin.
But uber-genius-daughter Mike Devine figures out fast that the extraterrestrial’s principal plan is
to employ its unfathomable interplanetary muscle and implode the planet. Which leaves the fate
of her family, not to mention the world, in her twelve-year-old hands.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“That’s almost six trillion miles per year—a single light-year,” Mike said.
“So, if they travel at light speed, they should be here pretty soon,” Maggie said.
“Better make extra pancakes,” Connie said.
“That’s lame, Dad,” Danny said.
“It’s witty, son,” Connie said. “You’ll understand when you get older.”
“I hope not,” Danny said.
“Not too soon,” Mike said. “The distance from Earth to the edge of the universe in any direction
takes forty-six point five gigalight-years.”
“How many light years in a gigalight-year?” Connie said.
“A billion,” Mike said.
“What does that mean in Earth years?” Maggie said.
“Voyager 1, our most distant space probe, traveled fourteen light-hours, not even one light-day,
and that took thirty Earth years. So, it would take about twenty-two thousand Earth years to
travel the same distance light travels in one light-year. About one quadrillion and one hundred
two trillion Earth years to reach the edge of the universe.”
If that’s a question on the genius test, I wonder which part of the light-speed equation Mike will
only get ninety-two percent right, Maggie thought.
“What if they were coming from the closest galaxy?” Maggie said.
“Andromeda,” Mike said. “Twenty-five hundred Earth years.”
“Long time,” Maggie said, and she turned off her flashlight.
“The meteors should have been here by now,” Connie said.
“I saw something up there,” Maggie said.
But something up there had seen her and made a sharp turn toward Earth.
In the back of the rental SUV, my stomach burned, and a sour taste flooded my mouth. One week into summer break and my family was dumping me at this strange academy. While I struggled to find my purpose, they would be in Aspen, Emma Claire enjoying a ballet workshop while my parents lounged at the pool.
I had planned to hold my ground and insist on the rec center job, but then Dad got the red-light ticket. As I heard him slam his way through the front door, I raced to intercept him before he could start yelling.
I had briefly debated telling the truth—my anger at the stricken look on Noah’s face as pee ran down his legs and puddled on the floor. I imagined Dad puffing up with pride that I had stood up for a boy being bullied. That fantasy was discarded because I knew Dad wouldn’t get it. He and Mom had never experienced classmates jeering at them and the way it made you curl up inside and want to die.
I then considered accepting the consequences he started listing—no screens, no permit or license until I was seventeen, no allowance, etc. I could handle those but DJ wouldn’t stop until she knew why I had taken the car out in the first place. And that couldn’t happen if I wanted to surInstead of an explanation, I offered him a deal. If I agreed to go to Haverford Pines, he wouldn’t punish me, tell DJ, or ask any questions.
She's in the most dangerous place in the world.
Prof. Meridia Vail, a member of the Bridgeway Space Station, has escaped the government stronghold and is on a mission among the human population of this "new" Earth. She needs to find scientists, engineers, researchers, anyone who can help her and her crew get back to their derelict space station that has crossed over into a different dimension. The sooner the better, too. The Bridgeway is in a decaying orbit and has the potential to kill millions, if it crash lands on the planet.
Trusting anyone in this New Earth is going to be hard to come by. The authorities have branded her as a maniac who has escaped from a mental hospital. For the past five years, multiple countries have colluded in declaring no survivors from the Bridgeway Space Station incident. When Meridia's finally able to convince a university professor, Dr. Dana Haden, of who she is, Prof. Vail realizes she's not home-free yet. She has to convince the entire world who she is and expose the lies nations have been telling their citizens. Will governments be forced to free her crew so they can work the problem...or will they take their chances and nuke the station from orbit to bury their secrets?
“Wait! Stop!” Dr. Haden grabbed the chair, but wasn’t able to yank it from my grip. She placed herself between me and the window. “What are you doing? Put this thing down.”
“He threatened you,” I replied. “I can break the glass with this and we can make it out on the ledge. I might be able to even carry you in my arms and we jump--”
“Oh my God, no.” She shook her head before smiling and motioning for me to lower the chair. “It’s okay. I swear. He’s a friend. Put the chair down; he won’t hurt us.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” She eased the chair out of my hands and placed it back on the floor. A sigh released the tension from her face and shoulders. “You would’ve seriously thrown that thing and tossed me across your shoulder before jumping three stories to your death?”
“Of course. I don’t know if I would’ve come away unscathed, but I would’ve taken the chance, as you’re my only chance to get back to my space station right now.”
“Wow. That’s some friendship.”
“You’re welcome…I think.” I half-smiled.
“I’m not even sure my husband would’ve gone to those depths.” A chuckle seemed to calm her more as she made her way to the door. Her hand motioned for me to relax. “It’s just my colleague, Professor Carlin.”
She opened the door and motioned for him to enter.
VBT: Bitroux
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Science Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
If Merouac ever thought his life’s work would culminate in leading the metal workshops of the Transcontinental Railroad Project, he was sorely mistaken.
Now, his true challenge lies in navigating the other-worldly abilities he’s only beginning to understand—abilities that allow him to tune metal to interdimensional frequencies.
While trying to be a guardian to his niece, Evra, he’s realising she may have more to teach him than he ever expected. At the same time, his decision to help an interdimensional race find refuge underground puts him at the centre of an even deeper mystery.
As reality reshapes itself around him, Merouac faces a growing realisation: the world of Ahm is on the brink of a profound transformation, and everything he thought he knew may soon be shattered.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

There was something about that zone of quiet concentration. It was always somewhere in the middle of those quiet moments where the blue light of the Top Hats had started to appear at the edge of his gaze. It had always been hard to see the things directly in his sight; they shifted and moved and always seemed hazy and insubstantial. He wondered if, in those moments, he had drifted into the Maolfi state without realising it.

He kept working. The surges of static came and went, heating his body, and then leaving, giving him a sense that his whole body was buzzing, vibrating. He kept moving, concentrating only on the wood. And things started to shift, but not in the way he had anticipated.

Soon, two piles had been moved and Merouac was starting to feel a welcome feeling of tiredness. He contemplated leaving the last pile of wood for the morning but kept moving instead. Then, something sounded.

He looked up. Nothing. Had anything made a noise at all? He felt sure he had heard something. All was still. What was it that he thought he had heard? Like someone or something was crashing through the trees, perhaps. He shook his head. Nothing unusual stirred, the flickering lights continued and below he could see hummers and their fluorescent markings shimmering in the trees.

Then he realised. He hadn’t heard it. He’d felt it.

He closed his eyes, tried to make his way to the place the Faurin called the Maolfi state. Kii had wanted him to find a place of deep listening. And perhaps what he was just starting to understand was, that you could listen with all your body, and feel sound in other ways than just noise.

After a time, he opened his eyes again and saw spheres hovering in the air, full of something he couldn’t quite comprehend.

Reaching out to touch them, they felt full and weighty and yet his hand could partially pass through them. They were not solid, and yet they were full. Like bubbles being blown by some invisible child, they formed and hung in the atmosphere.

They grew larger, then fuzzier, then collapsed from their own weight, dripping a strange sentience that dispersed back into the atmosphere. Often, they formed again straight away, the same spheres, the same size and colour, the same weight, only to burst and disperse once again.

Some of the smaller ones were only as large as his hand. Others, twice the size. And then hovering at greater height, larger spheres his whole body could have walked through. They shifted and mutated, formed and faded, pulsed and glowed. They were magical.

‘This is different,’ he said out loud, and grinned.

Blurb Blitz: Stellar Heir

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Science Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Jael Ked’Korhva hadn’t anticipated becoming the galaxy’s most wanted.

He hadn’t planned on picking up a strange alien artifact, either, but once it was clasped around his wrist, Jael was granted extraordinary abilities. His senses were heightened, his reflexes faster, and he could now regenerate from damage that would spell the end for others, which was a boon, considering he was just a derelict scavenger.

That was until forces from every corner of the stars wanted Jael’s artifact for themselves, and they’ll stop at nothing to take it back. What initially appears as a boon swiftly transforms into a weighty charge. Yet, it's a charge Jael accepts without hesitation, understanding the catastrophic potential should the relic fall into the wrong hands.

Prodded onward by visions of an ancient ally and a mysterious enemy, Jael becomes a pivotal piece in a vast interstellar play of power and dominion.

An action-packed space opera, perfect for science fiction fans of Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio or The Mercy of Gods by James S. A. Corey.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Jael’s world shifted, reality melting away as the woman’s touch transported his consciousness across the vastness of space. The galaxy unfurled before him, countless stars and vibrant worlds.
A creeping darkness emerged from the fringes, seeping into the cosmic fabric like spilled ink. Jael watched in horror as the void engulfed entire star systems, extinguishing their light with terrifying efficiency.
Planets that once teemed with life withered under the encroaching shadow. Lush forests crumbled to ash, oceans boiled away, and sprawling cities crumbled into dust. The screams of billions echoed across the vacuum, abruptly silenced as the darkness consumed them.
Stars flickered and died, snuffed out like candles in a gale. Nebulae collapsed, their swirling colors fading to a dull, lifeless gray. The galaxy’s spiral arms now resembled dark skeletal fingers reaching into nothingness.
As the last remnants of light faded, Jael found himself suspended in an endless, inky void. The darkness was not still, but writhed and pulsated. Shapeless entities, darker than the blackness surrounding them, twisted and coiled through the emptiness.
The woman’s voice echoed in his mind, “This is the future that awaits if you fail. The enemy comes, and with it, the end of all things.” She moved in close and placed a hand on his cheek. “Find me on Dusrist before it is too late.”
As the woman began to fade, behind her, another figure began to materialize. A shadow Jael hadn’t thought about in years.
Jael’s breath caught in his throat, his heart pounding against his chest. The figure’s face slowly came into focus—a sharp jawline, weathered by time and countless wars, gray, ashen skin, a tell-tale sign of genetic alteration and eyes that Jael would never forget. Those predatory, multi-pupiled eyes that had haunted Jael’s nightmares since he was a child.
Earth’s leaders are given an ultimatum: deliver Sam Sanderson to Logom, a planet known to
house a hostile AI civilization, or face interplanetary war.
as a matter of international security, she expects to get answers. But instead of receiving a
warm welcome, she finds that most people under the surface are distant, cold, and have built
walls of silence. While grappling with her unique power and the consequences of her actions,
she learns that the organization she’s supposed to serve has a chilling past and guards a dark
secret.
While Earth’s scientists scramble to defend their world and the planetary alliance from the AI
threat, Sam is forced on a mission to the Dark Galaxy. A place where dangers lurk, tensions run
save humanity.
Time’s running out, and there’s no turning back now…
From the award-winning author of Journey to the Hopewell Star comes the highly anticipated
sequel that’s sure to be a thrilling ride! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Cold sweat clung to her skin as they waited for the ship to power down. The gangway
descended, and a thick wave of dusty air swirled up and pushed against them. The brilliant red
and white grains of sand sparkled in the air, almost blinding her.
“You ready?” Kwan asked Sam as they made their way outside.
Ready? Kwan’s instructions had been vague and subjective at best. Be confident but not too
confident—what did that even mean? Don’t let them smell your fear? She was ready all
right—ready to run and hide. Hide her identity, hide away somewhere where no one could find
her. That’s all she wanted to do right now. She wanted to turn back. But she couldn’t. Not now.
They were already moving. Descending the gangway like prisoners being forced off the plank of
a ship. This didn’t feel like a diplomatic mission at all.
Dread rose from the pit of her stomach. They were leaving the ship and heading into uncharted
territory. With a bounty on her head and hostiles approaching, not knowing what would come
next, it took all her power just to keep herself together.
“As ready as can be.”
VBT: Dark Walker Series
DARK WALKER SERIES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Speculative Fiction/Horror/ Dark Sci-fi

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Series Blurb:
When we were children, they told us monsters weren't real. They were dead wrong.
It’s just a closet door with a skeleton key, but when David opens it, he unlocks a gateway to a
sinister world that’s bent on destroying everything and everyone he loves. Some doors are
better left closed.
Embark on a thrilling journey with the Dark Walker Series, and be transported into an
interdimensional tale of monsters, lies and self-discovery. Where the terror of darkness is real
and the line between ally and enemy is as thin as a blade.
"Equal parts coming of age story and otherworldly horror, Gulf probes the depths of loneliness,
loss of identity and childhood trauma. It is a true treat for fans of the genre and had me clutched
in its razor-clawed hands from the first word to the last.” -C.M. Forest author of Infested
Book One Blurb:
Seventeen-year-old David is fading from his world, like a Polaroid picture in reverse. He longs to
feel connected to something bigger.
When his brothers discover the new extension at the rental cottage comes with a locked door,
David finds the key first. Expecting to claim a bedroom, he opens a dimensional gateway
instead, exploring abandoned versions of his world in different timelines, 1960s muscle cars
alternating with crumbling cottages.
Except now the dimensional bridge won’t close, and something hungry claws the door at night.
David scours for clues to break the bridge, but each trip to the other side makes him fade more
on his. Even if he succeeds, he risks severing his connection to his own world, and dying on the
wrong side, forgotten.
Book Two Blurb:
There are doors that open to other worlds, but it’s no fairytale on the other side.
I thought otherworldly monsters bent on devouring my whole world starting with my family
trumped everything. Turns out, I was wrong. My world's only one of thousands facing
annihilation from the maneaters that tried to eat me alive. Charlie saved me, rolled into my life
on a motorcycle, and rescued me.
Problem is, I’m the Embassy’s property now. They’re the interdimensional agency tasked with
stemming the flow of ravenous aliens into our universe, but they seem more interested in
studying me. I crashed a gateway in a way they’ve never seen. The Embassy wants to replicate
that. I think they want to use me as a war weapon.
If I don’t convince Charlie to help me escape, I’ll be an Embassy science experiment for the rest
of my short life, or worse, eternally trapped in the dark hell that fills the spaces between worlds.
Excerpt from GULF:
Certain my family is gone, I cross to the five-panel in two strides, twist the key into the lock, and
push the door.
It doesn’t open.
Of course it doesn’t, idiot. It’s still hung like a closet door. It opens out, not in.
I pull.
Mirror.
That’s the first thought that strikes me as I take in the exact duplicate of the living room I’m
standing in. Same green, crushed velvet sofa bed sagging behind me. Identical chipped
melamine cabinets. Same painted windmills on the porcelain tile backsplash—wait.
No me.
No reflection of me. Tentative as Alice in bloody Wonderland, I pull the black skeleton key from
its hole and crane my head through the doorway. No dirty breakfast dishes, but when I look over
my shoulder, there’s still stacks of egg-yolk spackled tin plates beside our sink. Crumpled under
one arm of the hide-a-bed is my plaid blanket, but the one in front of me is empty. Looks dusty.
“What the hell, Everett?” This is creepy. The ole bugger’s built an exact mirror image of the room next door. Where on earth did he find
the twin to that green monster of a couch? There’s even a spring beckoning through the same
spot in the back cushion.
Got an eye for detail, hasn’t he?
Same woodstove too, only this one has a cold, crusty frying pan on it. I can still feel the heat on
my back from ours across the wall.
The pine planking creaks under my next step, and I jump and then smile, but I’m pretty sure it
ends up as a snarl. An odd feeling consumes me whole, the one I had just before Sam Ren and
his gorilla wingmen beat the piss out of me behind the Dairy Queen. A curdled sense of
approaching doom slithers through my lungs.
Get out.
Primal instinct presses me back a step toward the door, but I hold fast there, like a dumbass,
like I waited while Sam Ren eased toward me in the Dairy Queen parking lot.
Shaking out my hands and hissing through my teeth, I scan the room trying to identify what’s
wrong, because something is. Something is very wrong, and it’s not just the duplicate room, or
the draft emanating from here at night. It takes a few seconds to pin it down. The out-of-place
thing. My throat spasms when I see it. I swallow and shift to the balls of my feet.
“Window,” I whisper.
Interview
On average, how long does the writing process take?
For me, it varies. My debut book took more years to complete than I care to count. Gulf, book one of the
Dark Walker series took 30 days, but that hurt. Book 2, Breach, took five months, but my longer works, I
budget around a year for. I’m generally a slow writer 
 When did you realize you wanted a career in writing?
My sister and I recently found a little pink diary with a lock on it in my mom’s basement. Neither of us
could recall whether it was mine or hers, but when we busted it open, it was obviously mine. Apparently, I
declared at the tender age of eight that I was going to be a famous author someday. I don’t think I’ll ever
get to the point where I’m doing this full time and it pays all my bills, but I don’t mind my part-time day job.
It’s a great balance.
 If you weren’t an author, what other career path would you have taken?
My background is oilfield. I’ve been a plant operator at a sour gas plant so I imagine I would have stuck
with that until the shift work got too excruciating. Currently, I teach First Aid and other oilfield related
courses. The First Aid course comes in handy for characters responding realistically to injuries in my
books.
 Out of the characters that you created, who is your favorite?
Hands down, David, the main character of the Dark Walker series. He deals with all the horrible things I
throw at him with an awkward tenacity and humour that I wish I had.
 What advice would you give to someone looking to be a writer?
Write. Read. People watch. Repeat. Only take the advice that works for you and forget about the rest.
You need creative input to be able to create creative output, so reading is equally important as writing.
Have fun with it. We only live once 
 What kind of research (if any) was required for any of your books?
Well, my writing spans the gamut of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, so I’ve researched anything from how to
brain tan a deer hide, to the symptoms of a penetrating chest injury, how long can a human survive in
complete vacuum, time dilation derivation, steam engines, beginner mistakes with crossbows, long term
effects of isolation on the human psyche. You know, the usual 
 What are your thoughts on fanfiction?
I’m flattered that folks would love a piece of writing, character, or world enough to want to add their own
spin to it. To me, it signals that they loved the story enough for it to stick with them, and they didn’t want it
to end. There are few higher compliments for an author than that. AI fanfiction, on the other hand, hard
pass.
Would you prohibit fans from writing stories about your book(s)?
Writing them, no. I’d prefer if they had to the courtesy to ask permission first. But, like I said, I’d be
flattered. Selling them, now that crosses a line. I’ve seen a few posts where someone was binding fan
fiction into books and selling them. That’s not flattery. That’s theft. That’s profiting off months or years of
someone else’s hard work. AI writing is doing the same thing. It’s largely trained on materials that authors,
narrators, and artists did not grant permission to use, and it’s putting those same folks out of work. That’s
not a tool. It’s theft, plain and simple.
How long after you finish a book do you start another one?
I usually take a month or two off, then I’m on to the next one. I launched straight into book three of the
Dark Walker series after I finished Breach though. It’ll be out in early 2025. I can wait to share it with you
all! Thank you so much for having me on the blog. I really appreciate the support.
“We don’t have much time.”
The first words out of my mother’s mouth were not what I had expected. I had expected to find both of my parents home from work early; I had expected them to want to talk to me; I had expected an endless stream of questions. But not this.
The urgency in my mother’s tone told me this was more than a melancholic response to my impending departure—this was much more. Frowning with concern, I looked from my mother’s knitted brow to my father’s taut jawline. I stood frozen in place, hesitant even to close the door behind me.
“Come in,” my mother rushed on impatiently. “We really don’t have much time.”
Obediently, robot-like, I took a segmented step. My father pulled me forward and deeper into the kitchen until the door clicked shut behind me.
“You need to listen very carefully to what we’re about to tell you,” my mother told me sternly.
“We won’t have a chance to say anything twice. What you hear, you must never repeat.”
“If any of us are caught sharing this information, we’ll be executed,” my father cut in, voice low and grave.
Book Blast: The Edge of All Worlds
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Enter to win a physical copy of the paperback of Carson of Venus: The Edge of All Worlds (continental US only). Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.
Carson of Venus is back in the first novel of groundbreaking Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe series!
When a mysterious enemy attacks his adopted nation of Korva, Earthman Carson Napier discovers his own arrival on Venus years ago may have unknowingly triggered the strike. The invaders' trail of death and destruction leads Carson and his beloved princess Duare headlong into battle against a seemingly invincible, primordial race. But that is not Carson's only challenge, for an uncanny phenomenon has entangled him with two strange individuals from beyond spacetime. Will Carson be able to solve the mysteries of his past and the enigmatic visitors before the entire planet descends into chaos?
Also includes the bonus novelette "Pellucidar: Dark of the Sun" by Christopher Paul Carey, introducing Victory Harben, the ERB Universe's newest heroine:
The very principle of physics behind the Gridley Wave has mysteriously failed, cutting off all communication between the hollow world of Pellucidar and the outer crust, and now inventor Jason Gridley must seek help from his brilliant young protégé, Victory Harben. Together they recover timeworn records from deep in the ruins of a dead Mahar city, hoping to use knowledge of Pellucidar's former reptilian overlords to jumpstart the Gridley Wave. But when their experiment goes terribly wrong, Jason and Victory suddenly find themselves drawn into the inscrutable machinations of an ancient evil.
THE FIRST UNIVERSE OF ITS KIND
A century before the term "crossover" became a buzzword in popular culture, Edgar Rice Burroughs created the first expansive, fully cohesive literary universe. Coexisting in this vast cosmos was a pantheon of immortal heroes and heroines--Tarzan of the Apes, Jane Clayton, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Carson Napier, and David Innes being only the best known among them. In Burroughs' 80-plus novels, their epic adventures transported them to the strange and exotic worlds of Barsoom, Amtor, Pellucidar, Caspak, and Va-nah, as well as the lost civilizations of Earth and even realms beyond the farthest star. Now the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe expands in an all-new series of canonical novels written by today's talented authors!
“You should not have come here,” Yron interrupted. He looked over my friends and then opened his mouth repeatedly, as if he were straining for air. “You should turn around now and go back home in that strange flying vessel of yours.” He waited, as if he truly expected us to go.
Duare broke the awkward silence. “We are here to ask for help, or at the very least, some information.”
“I have none of that,” Yron said.
“Help or information?” I asked.
“Neither. Both.” The jong appeared flustered by the request, and by our very presence. I wondered why our appearances here had so obviously upset this usually cunning and devious leader. Had I known that it was Yron we were dealing with, I certainly would have thought twice about meeting with him so far down in his own element.
“What are you doing out here?” I asked. Yron and his people lived thousands of miles to the north in the city of Mypos, so what had prompted them to establish such a far-flung outpost? And who had built it? I had been to Mypos and seen firsthand the fish-people’s poor sense of art and architecture. They certainly hadn’t constructed this outpost on their own.
Before Yron could respond, Ero Shan stepped forward and demanded to hear anything that Yron knew about Nalte and the strange soldiers who had taken her. Duare interjected and described the creatures we had encountered, their craft, and how they had absconded with our companion.
Yron looked anxious, if his rapidly flapping gill slits meant anything, and said, “It sounds like you’ve run afoul of the Linneauns.”
Taran Wird, the loudmouth mistress of flame and lightning, didn’t want to attend the formal gathering of the supernatural elite. She did so only to help to unite the supreme beings in attendance in one common goal: protecting Taran’s sister, Celia. Celia is pregnant with alpha werewolf Aric Connor’s child, the same child prophesized to save the world from uprising evil. Evil wants this child dead before he is born and, more importantly, before he can grow strong enough to stop it. Taran and her werewolf lover, Gemini, put plans in place to protect Celia. Master Vampire Misha Aleksandr and his clan also swear their allegiance to Celia and vow to keep her from harm. The witches even cast protection spells around the manor to curse anyone with malintent who enters. Nothing was supposed to go wrong, except everything did. Creatures that shouldn’t exist stalk the grounds and invade the premises, and every curse meant to shield the guests turns against them. No one counted on the powerful being who arrived uninvited. But he’s here, manipulating the magic enclosing the estate to work in his favor. As body counts rise and allies become enemies, chances are Celia won’t survive the night. But evil never counted on how hard Taran Wird would fight, even at the expense of her life.
“Emme,” I call out. I frown when the hall darkens and she appears to walk further and faster away from us. “Emme, don’t go without us.” She takes off, running. “Em,” Bren hollers. “God damn it, wait!” Emme rounds a corner and disappears into yet another hall. I pick up my pace, passing a small meeting room. Emme is moving fast, too fast. What’s happening to her? My steps to falter when the light scones dim further. I turn around, the rooms we passed are gone. There are no doors or windows, only a long corridor covered with dark paneling remains. Everything feels off and I can no longer hear the gentle strut of Emme’s feet. “Bren?” I say. “She’s gone,” he says. “I know, but—” “She’s been gone a while,” he interrupts. He takes a long whiff. “That wasn’t her.” “Excuse me?” I look back where I thought I last saw her. “Then, who was that?” “Not Emme,” he says, the muscles along his jaw tensing. He clasps my left arm. “Come on. We have to find her.” I double back and into a wall. “What the fuck?” Bren snaps. The hall narrows, swallowing what used to be the way out in darkness. Bren’s head jerks up. “Did you hear that?” “I don’t hear anything,” I respond. It’s the truth. There is no sound. Just me and Bren and our increasing breaths. “What do you hear?” I ask, keeping my voice low. He closes his eyes, listening hard, the rise and fall of his chest growing more pronounced. A light whisper of wind rustles from the darkness, intensifying into a pained moan as it reaches us. “Aw, hell,” Bren says. “Stay with me, okay?” “Ah, sure,” I say, trying to remain calm and more than failing. I turn around when something stirs behind us. “Do you think the spells are just surging now that Celia has arrived? They’re meant to keep her safe. Maybe they’re reacting to her presence.” I whip around. The wall is gone. And so is Bren. I inch backward, my motions dimming the lights further. My right arm shoots up, lighting like a torch and sparing me from the blackness encasing me. The sound of splintering wood has me lowering my arm. I jump when thin rivers of blood trickle toward my feet. Blood is never a good sign. It leads from bad to deadly every damn time. Most would run at the sight. Me, being me, and knowing there’s no other recourse, I follow the tiny rivers. I move carefully, not wanting the thickening fluid to touch me. Dark magic is particularly nasty and usually requires a sacrifice. This blood signifies more than death, it’s a trigger to whatever will fire next. My light strobes in and out, in tune with my accelerating heart rate, and against the tiny rivers that expand into widening pool. The horrible silence resumes, adding an extra dose of eerie. Don’t be afraid, I tell myself. It’s quiet. That’s all. I don’t manage to convince myself. Not when the moaning resumes with the next step I take. It starts out low, almost imperceptible, swelling in volume until it’s loud enough to muffle my rattling teeth. The temperature drops absurdly low. The chill of death is here, expanding quickly, mingling with spirits and dark magic, and determined to drag me to hell. Son of a bitch. I reach another wall, another dead end. I release a breath, cursing when more moans join the first, these much higher pitched and much, much closer. Frozen fingers drag down my spine. I turn around, ready to blast whatever is touching me only to stop dead. The streaks of blood are moving, swirling in freakish directions to form letters and words. N-Y-T-E-S… My light shakes from my violent trembles. A-R-E… The letters darken to black, smearing the wooden floors. C-O-M-I-N-G I jolt when something crashes on the level above. I don’t wait for more of this twisted spelling bee. I take off in a sprint, shaking my right hand. “Get us to Celia,” I tell Sparky. “Get us there now.” I just miss crashing into a wall that materializes in front of me. I shake my arm harder. I don’t typically order Sparky around. It’s not something I can do. As connected as we are, she’s practically a separate entity with her own set of rules I’ve yet to figure out. “Come on, girl,” I insist. “Celia needs us.” More by instinct than anything Sparky does, I spin, startling when a new set of words form along the wall. NYTES HAVE COME
Book Blast: Live Soldier
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $75 Amazon/BN gift card via the Rafflecopter at the end of the page. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.
THE APOCALYPSE WILL BE TELEVISED.
You know what they call me.
Camera-eyed killer. Spawn of the ruins. Man who stole a city.
These are not the names of a saint. But every legend has an origin story. And because of what I am, you can experience mine in real-time.
Fair warning, though: my life contains instances of drug use, bio-terrorism, aquatic street fighting, unsolicited retinal surgery, advanced warfare, amateur sex and straight-up murder.
But if you're sick of sanitized heroes... then log in, lose yourself and become the Live Soldier. Because you've never met a marine like me.
Read an Excerpt
The balcony is moving, I realize dimly. No - the entire labyrinth is shifting, rearranging itself into a single great platform. A low dais now occupies its center, a ring of security guards creating a perimeter around it. But these alterations have nothing to do with the drug; robotics and stagecraft are at work here.
Then the world’s color inverts: white turning to black, blue become red etc. I’ve barely adjusted when direction follows suit, and now everything is upside down. Oh crap, this will be the Anex, how much did she -
A (to me) golden clad figure floats up (and therefore down) from nowhere, until her bare feet make contact with the dais. Fantastically tall and smooth cheeked with flint-grey eyes, purple hair pulled back from a sharp widow’s peak. Letiva made young again.
“Welcome,” she says, “to the newly completed set of my upcoming feature!”
The crowd is enthralled, but the Ladder is positively smitten. He takes a step in her direction, but his legs aren’t cooperating and - more distressingly - he has begun to emit a high pitched mechanical whine. I think it’s a hallucination at first, but the crowd can hear it too. Everywhere I look people are clapping hands over their ears, backing away from the Ladder as he careens straight for Letiva. Her security detail closes in -
- and I’m blown off my feet. Everything goes black, shifting abruptly to blue, a deep bass roar accompanying. Now I’m falling, spinning like a top, until an impact hits me with a façade of deep, gutsy red. This holds for some time, fading gradually into pearly white unconsciousness.
