Blog Tour: What Lies Beyond the Veil

What Lies Beyond the Veil, the first must-read book in the dark fantasy Of

Flesh & Bone Series from USA Today bestselling author Adelaide Forrest

writing as Harper L. Woods is available now!

Once, we’d worshipped them as Gods.

For nearly 400 years, the Veil has protected us from the Fae of Alfheimr. In their

absence, our lives have shifted from decadence and sin to survival and virtue under the

guidance of the New Gods. I’ve spent my entire life tending to the gardens next to the

boundary between our worlds, drawn to the shimmering magic like a moth to the flame.

Then, we died on their swords.

All of that changes the day the Veil shatters, unleashing the fae upon our world once

again. The magic of faerie marks those of us they mean to take, but the Mist Guard

protecting Nothrek will kill us all before they let the fae have us. There’s no choice but to

flee everything I’ve ever known, not if I want to live to see my twenty-first birthday as a

free woman.

Now, they’ll claim what’s theirs.

But before they capture me, Caelum saves me from the Wild Hunt. Fae-marked and on

the run, he is able to fight back in ways I only dream of. From tentative alliance to all-

consuming passion, our bond strengthens as the fae close in and evil lurks ever nearer.

With my life on the line, he is everything I shouldn’t dare to want and a distraction I can’t

afford. I can’t seem to stay away, not even with something greater on the line.

My heart.

I stepped in front of the High Priest, bowing my head forward in submission as

my mother sobbed behind me. Her wails echoed through the gardens, each one striking

against my heart.

“Kneel,” the High Priest said, the order a murmur between the two of us as he

guided me forward. The Veil swayed just in front of me, close enough to touch, and for

just one moment I pictured reaching out to touch it.

I wondered what would happen if I did, then watched my fingers stretching

forward as if compelled. The magic pulsing off of it touched my skin, sliding over my

fingers as the curtain swayed toward me in perfect unison. The High Priest pressed his

hand to the top of my shoulder, guiding me to my knees. The movement pulled my hand

away from the magic that covered my skin before I could touch the Veil itself, tearing

away the warmth I’d almost known.

In a world filled with nothing but cold, bitter half-truths, the Veil beckoned like a

warm embrace, welcoming me into a place where I would be protected at all costs.

My hands dropped to my thighs as my knees hit the dirt beneath me, my palms

facing the sky as I tipped my head up to stare into the eyes of the High Priest. He stood

just to the side of me, his body close enough that he could stop me from falling into the

Veil itself when I died, but out of the way so that my blood would stain the soil and not

him.

“We thank you for your sacrifice, Estrella Barlowe of Mistfell. May you find peace

in your next existence, wrapped in the arms of The Mother.” He sank his hand into the

hair at the back of my head, gripping the strands tightly to pull me to the angle he

needed. The tip of that dagger pressed into the side of my throat, digging into the flesh

as the warmth of blood trickled down my skin. “Close your eyes now, child.”

His eyes bore into mine, willing me to do as commanded. I understood at that

moment that he didn’t want to watch the life fade from my eyes as he slit my

throat—that he took no pleasure in doing the will of The Father.

I did, letting them drift closed. Ringing filled my ears, drowning out my mother’s

hoarse cries and the sound of Brann trying to console her. My body filled with warmth,

like the press of a warm hearth on a cold winter’s night, the stars shimmering outside

the window as I cuddled up with a book.

It was the first moment of contentment I’d felt, the first moment when there wasn’t

any pain. I didn’t want to hurt anymore. I didn’t want to be afraid of what was to come.

I drew in a breath, feeling the High Priest dig his knife deeper into my skin and

begin to drag it to the side. Sudden awareness burst through my contentment, the

impression of someone banging on the other side of a doorway, though there was none

to be found.

The world shook as an animalistic roar came from the other side of the Veil.

Alex fucking Benning. One of the most beautiful girls I’d ever been with, and one of the most

beautiful memories I had in my life. Sitting thirty feet away from me right now. I hadn’t seen her

since I broke her heart twelve years ago. I broke my own that day too, but I was too young and

stupid to realize that at the time.

Her hair was a bit darker now. She was a little taller maybe. Her features were softer back then,

but the carved look of them now was stunning. It took me a minute to recognize her because of

that but now that I did, it felt like I had been looking at her our whole lives. What was she doing

here again?

Carol. Shit.

I knew Carol Baldwin had passed away last month but I’d been out of town sourcing new

lumber. I got distracted and was ashamed to admit I hadn’t thought about Alex visiting. Or

maybe it was that I tried my best to not think about her at all. Any time I did, which was far too

often that I would have liked to admit, I was faced with the failure of my youth. And the one who

got away.

“Alex who?” I heard Rafael question from behind me. I still didn’t take my eyes off her, but she

wasn’t paying me any attention. Had she recognized me?

“Alex…Alex. Wait, Alex?” Theo’s voice now rang in my ears and a chill went through me. Yeah.

The very one. My first everything. First love. First fuck. First heartbreak. I stood up but couldn’t

get my feet to move from the spot next to our table. From what felt like a distance, I vaguely

heard Theo filling Raf in on my teenage romance with Alex. It felt inadequate to explain it that

way though. And I had spent the past twelve years doing my best to forget her. But my

traitorous heart never wanted to do such a thing.

I got my feet moving before I could think twice about it. She was here, no changing that. I

needed to talk to her. And I sure as hell needed to get her away from Johnny the bartender. I

approached her from the side but she didn’t notice at first. She was reading something on her

phone and I didn’t want to startle her so I sat down at the bar, one stool away, and waited.

A moment later, she looked over. And then did a double take. So maybe she hadn’t recognized

me before.

“Sam Waters.”

“Hey, Alex.”

I looked up at Sam’s face. Concern was all over it, but something else was in his eyes. It was

then that I realized just how close he was standing to me. My breasts were grazing his chest

with each breath I took. For a minute, we just stared at each other. Hesitantly, I brought my free

hand up to rest over Sam’s heart. It was pounding deep within his ribs and each beat was like a

drum I could feel vibrating everywhere.

Suddenly, his other hand was at my waist, fingers digging into my flesh enough to make me

jump. Not out of fear. Right here, right now, I wasn’t scared. I needed him. I needed to feel him,

to be felt by him. To forget everything else that was happening. I didn’t want to think about being

alone or someone trying to hurt me. I wanted to live in this moment.

I released his hand and brought mine up to wrap around his neck. Our eyes didn’t move off of

each other. He bent down slowly, grabbing onto my hip. His lips were so close to mine, I could

feel his warm breath on my face as he opened them. What happened in a moment felt drawn

out in slow motion. It was too slow for me. I lifted my head towards him, our lips only an inch

away. And then, a riot.

His lips finally crashed down on mine and everything exploded. Our touch, our breath, the hot

streaks of anticipation flashing through my body. I felt his hands grab me harder, hard enough to

maybe leave a bruise and if I could have spared the brain cells to think about that, I would have

found it sexy. But instead, I couldn’t think. Just feel. His lips were surprisingly soft, but the

pressure was hard. He swooped his tongue into part my own lips and claim my mouth. My

hands at the back of his neck now pulled at his hair, not to pull him away but to have something

to hold onto in this frenzy.

satisfied plus my secret writing career that’s done better than I ever dreamed. What’s not to love?

There’s just one thing missing. But I don’t know what it is.
