Lynnette sat in a deck chair on the ferry, knees pulled up under her wrap and a travel mug of

strong coffee in her hands. The steady thrum of the vessel’s engines wasn’t helping her

headache, but she found the salt spray refreshing and closed her eyes for a moment to enjoy

the sensation. In a little over an hour, she would be home. Getting back to the sanctuary of her

bakery—where the world made sense and she felt safe and in control—was her primary

motivation. She was running on too little sleep and too much of everything else, and her

of magical realism. She is a deep thinker and tea drinker who finds inspiration in myths and

folktales, poems and ballads, and academic writing on a variety of subjects. Diagnosed with

autism and giftedness as an adult, she enjoys exploring themes of neurodiversity and opposing

character perspectives in her writing.

It had started two days after high school graduation, following a sleepover at Cindy Beaufont’s house. Cindy and I had slipped away before dawn, leaving a note claiming we were going out to the beach for an entire day of sun worship. Instead, we bought bus tickets to San Francisco and hopped the first Greyhound headed west. I’d calculated we would pass through Atlanta and be somewhere in Alabama before we were missed.

Inspired by the underground newspapers we read, Cindy and I were joining the throngs of young adults who were descending on San Francisco for the Sumer of Love. We parted ways as we stepped off the bus. I purchased two pair of overalls and wore little else for almost three months. The jeans and t-shirts I had taken with me would come home just as they had been taken from Mom’s washer on the first day of June.

I was searching for freedom. For a month, a summer, a year, a period of time, I wanted to be free, free from the rules and discipline of the drache, free from the expectations for an upper class, below-Broad young woman in old Charleston, free to consider and understand my shifting nature. I passed the summer painting dragons, making jewelry, and selling my work to buy food. I had done well, I thought. I had left home with fifty dollars, lived well, and my wallet currently held sixty-two greenbacks.

It is mid-August now, the Summer of Love is winding down, my freshman year in college beckons, and my masquerade as a flower child must come to an end.

The real world calls, and I had planned to leave for home next week.

But Bing is dead.

Someone will link me to Bing, someone who saw us in the park in the moonlight, someone who watched us leave the house together, perhaps a friend of his to whom he confided his “plans” for the evening. The witnesses from the park all will tell a story of a golden dragon. The more lucid may recount how a blond girl turned into the golden dragon. All will say the dragon cut the man to bits with her hand.

Believable, right?

All of them, ninety-eight of hundred at the least, will have been smoking pot or dropping acid. Police officers will smirk, and search for a human perp. I was the girl with him, the one screaming “rape,” and the police will want to blame me for his death, although they will be hard pressed to explain how I overcame a man so much larger than I and dismembered him without a weapon, all in the space of thirty seconds.

Should officers frighten me, well, young draches have been known to shift involuntarily. An all-round bad scene.

Life will be simpler if I disappear, if I become an untraceable phantom.

I need to be on the road tonight.

I live near Charleston, South Carolina, where I walk the beaches, eat fresh seafood, and photograph the ocean, the birds, and the beautiful sunsets. Seven of my nine novels have been set in Charleston, but Dragon Mist is the first to explore the lives of the non-human residents of the “holy city.”

Kristal Dawn Harris is an American author, born in Middletown, Ohio, on August 16, 1970. She currently resides in Ohio with her husband. Kristal has been married for 27 years and has two children. She graduated from Carlisle High School in 1988, then furthered her education at Miami University. She has a business degree in Accounting Technology. Kristal spent twenty years working as an Office Coordinator in the hospital until she released her debut novel, “The Rings of Faolan-Emeralds,” through The Wild Rose Press.

After their initial attempts to convince her to return to the pack house, they’d decided on a wait-and-see kind of approach. Little did they know, Lily did not intend to ever return to her human life. Her paws swiftly carried her over the uneven ground, as she dodged trees, fallen logs and rocks in her way. The wind ran its warm fingers through her fur as the sun guided her. Her trailing party made noise to alert her that they were a couple yards back pacing her, but never coming any closer. Of course, it wasn’t exactly as if Lily had welcomed their visits, growling whenever someone came too close, but they kept coming back. She wondered when they would finally understand there was no life for her to return to. Increasing her speed, she tried to lengthen the distance between them, but to no avail. Why would the alpha bother? Sure, send out a warrior or two. But to come himself and bring Marcus, Jensgar’s son, along was disconcerting. Why wouldn’t the pack leave her alone? It wasn’t as if she were a viable omega anymore. True, she still had her gifts, but she wouldn’t be sharing them with anyone.

The lake gleamed and sparkled in the distance calling her forward and leaving her thoughts where they belonged, behind her.

His hackles bristled, and a low growl rolled up his throat, his beast chiming in with its own displeasure. In the two weeks since he’d met Elise, his companion had grudgingly played along with the self-imposed distance Tate had kept between them. A distance his instincts insisted was crucial to learn and prepare for the hunt ahead. Hell, the way Elise’s heart had hammered in those first few seconds, distance had been downright necessary. The only reliable action that kept him from pinning her to the floor and taking her right then and there.

But his coyote was done with waiting. Had exhausted its patience and was ready to get on with the business of winning their mate.

Almost time. Just a few more hours.

It was more thought and emotion than actual words, the connection between man and animal as natural as his heart and lungs working in synchronization.

A twig snapped.

Tate spun toward the sound, ears tweaking in the direction of soft, but steady footfalls against soil softened by April’s steady rains. Logic told him it was Jade finally showing up to do what he’d asked of her, but with Draven still on the loose and hunting clan primos, the warrior in him wasn’t willing to run on logic alone.

A second later, Jade strode into view, her long dark hair loose and swinging with each confident step, and the silver charms she’d woven into braids on one side of her head sparking in the waning sunlight. While she wasn’t his sister in the truest sense, they may as well have shared blood. He sure as hell wanted to strangle her right about now the way a blood-bound brother would.

He waited until she was within ten feet to welcome his shift, the snap and burn beneath his skin as he relinquished his animal form to the Otherworld nothing compared to the impatience twisting his insides. “You’re late.”

Apparently, he and his coyote weren’t the only ones in a nasty mood, because Jade snarled back at him as only a woman could, a little of her lynx mingling with the sound. “Elise is my friend, not an assignment. If you don’t want to work with my timetable, then get off your ass and engage with your mate the way you’re supposed to.”

“She’s new.”

“So? Katy was new, too, and Priest barely let her out of his sight.”

Oh, Elise hadn’t been far from him. Maybe not always visible, but aside from time spent at work with a tattoo iron in his hand or running down leads on Draven and their missing seer primo when Priest demanded it, Tate had stayed close to her. It’d meant a lot of time in coyote form to maintain control and sleeping hidden outside her home, but he’d kept as tight of a connection as he dared. “She’s different.”
